“In 1957 my sister, Rodelinda and her husband, Guy Dickey had a dream to open the first restaurant on the beach in Puerto Vallarta. With the help of another investor, La Palapa became their dream come true. It was the last dwelling going south and many of their friends called them “crazy” for building so far out of town.

At the time there was no bridge across the Río Cuale and to travel to this side of town, a jeep or one of the two existing taxis needed to be hired, as long as the river wasn’t too high! The original “palapa,” or “thatched roof” was designed and constructed by Guillermo Wulff and all materials were authentic and very “tropical.” Exotic drinks served in handblown glassware, live music and freshly caught seafood from the bay prepared with local ingredients and recipes were the specialties.

My whole family has participated at some time and in some way in the business. In 1987 La Palapa was redesigned by one of my brothers, Arq. Salvador Pérez. I am the youngest brother of the family, and many of my childhood memories are centered around La Palapa. Continuing with the same traditions I am proud to say that La Palapa Restaurant is still in the family and thanks to your patronage, we look forward to many more years of sharing our tropical paradise with you.”

“En 1957 mi hermana Rodelinda y su esposo el Sr. Guy Dickey tenían el sueño de abrir el primer restaurant en la playa de Puerto Vallarta. Con la ayuda de un inversionista el día 31 de Diciembre de 1958 ese sueño se hizo realidad.

Era el último lugar construido hacia el sur y a muchos de sus amigos esto les pareció una idea descabellada el construir un restaurant tan lejos del centro, pues en ese tiempo no había puente que cruzara el Río Cuale y para viajar a ese lado había que rentar un jeep o uno de los dos taxis que existían entonces, siempre y cuando el río no estuviera crecido. Originalmente la Palapa fue diseñada y construida por el Ing. Guillermo Wulff con materiales auténticos de la región. Bebidas exóticas servidas en vidrio soplado, música viva y mariscos frescos preparados con ingredientes y recetas locales eran las especialidades.

Toda mi familia ha participado en algún tiempo y de alguna manera en el negocio. La Palapa de hoy fue rediseñada y construida en 1987, por uno de mis hermanos el Arquitecto Salvador “Cachi” Pérez. Yo soy el más joven de mi familia y muchos de los recuerdos de mi niñez se relacionan con La Palapa. Continuando con la tradición estoy orgulloso de que La Palapa siga aún en nuestras manos y, gracias a su preferencia seguimos compartiendo con ustedes nuestro paraíso tropical.”
